Cinema Integrated Learning in Higher Education – the Case of Viana do Castelo Polytechnic – Northern Portugal

Abstract
Current theories suggest that education and visual culture are closely related to the development of cultural
values and cinema can offer teachers a practical medium, through which teachers can empower students with
complex ideas about their world. This article focuses on the use of images that encourages Higher Education
students to consider multiple views and concepts, articulate their own understanding to be thoughtful citizens
within the complexity of the present multicultural society. The findings provide useful information on cultural
resources that encourage interdisciplinary discussions, with unique perspectives on cultural awareness, and
social activism.
